The fun part
The fun part of this course is… Well, everything… learning to dive is an incredible experience. Learn how to breathe underwater (the first time is something you’ll never forget) and what you need to know to become a certified diver. During the course, you’ll have at least five pool dives and four dives at sites in the area, all under the supervision of your PADI instructor.
What You Learn
- How fun it is to dive
- Diving equipment appropriate for the local diving environment
- How to plan and execute actual dives
- How to prevent and manage problems
The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:
- Knowledge Development ( online, independent study or in a classroom) to understand basic principles of scuba diving
- Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills
- Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore!
If you have already done some diving on a Discover Scuba Diving Experience or a resort course, the skills you have already learned can be credited to one of the parts of the entire Open Water Diver certification course.
The scuba diving equipment you use
On the PADI Open Water Diver course, you learn how to use basic scuba equipment, including a dive computer and standard accessories. The equipment you wear varies, depending upon whether you’re diving in tropical, temperate or cold water.
Check with your local dive center about the gear you’ll need to hire/included for this course; you will find almost everything at a dive centre/shop.
Study materials you’ll need
For the Open Water Diver Course, PADI offers a variety of materials for self-study. Whilst eLearning is the cheapest option, there is also the book and DVD package or the multimedia DVD-ROM.
The PADI Open Water Diver course materials deal with everything you need to know about basic diving skills, terminology and safety procedures. Each concept has a description and demonstration exercises in the video, which you practise later in the pool (or similar environment) with your Instructor. Finally, as a certified diver, you can use the course materials as a reference for your future underwater adventures and to revise what you’ve learned.
Note: subscribe to the PADI Open Water Diver Online Course to have immediate access, via your computer, to the manual and videos integrated into a single online learning guide.
